About

An independent guide to downsizing and settling an estate.

The Great Sort is an independent publication for anyone facing a house full of things and a family’s worth of decisions — the people doing the sorting, and the adult children who often carry it out. We cover what belongings are worth, how to sell them, and how to leave an estate in good order.

The full publication launches in 2027, and the letter starts now — carrying plain guidance to people already in the middle of these decisions.

Our promise

Where the money goes, we say so.

  • We name the fees — every commission, buyer’s premium, and cut — so you can compare them.
  • We disclose any referral relationship on every page it touches. Read our full disclosures.
  • We take no payment for coverage. No company can buy a recommendation.
  • We’ll tell you when something isn’t worth selling.

The people

Who we are.

Editorial standards

How we work.

Every figure we publish is verified and attributed to a named source, so you can check it yourself. We report prices and fees as we find them, and we say when a number is an estimate rather than a fact.

Corrections. If we get something wrong, email us and we will fix it and note the fix on the page. A correction is a record, not an embarrassment.

For how referral relationships work on this site — and what they never influence — read our disclosures.
